Warm, almost middle eastern weather, low prices, plenty to see and do and a friendly Greek Cypriot welcome have made Cyprus easily our most popular winter destination over the past ten years. Now we are back in Paphos with a new hotel, higher quality and lower prices!

The legendary Aphrodite’s birthplace near Paphos brought early fame to this end of Cyprus, and indeed Paphos became the capital of the island in 323 BC under the Egyptian successors to Alexander the Great.

The visit of Paul and Barnabas in AD45 brought Christianity to the island, and many of the archaeological remains in the Paphos area date back to this Roman time. Paphos is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and excavations continue on a very large site which already boasts a Roman odeon and agora and some remarkable mosaics. The locals are also very proud of an ancient pillar where, allegedly, St Paul was tied up and flogged.

Other archaeological finds are older still, and the famous Tombs of the Kings are a large series of mysterious vaults and catacombs.

Unspoilt countryside

Just a few miles inland are the Troodos mountains rising to almost 2000 metres. Frequently snow covered in winter and spring, you could in theory go snow skiing in the morning and water skiing in the afternoon.

More likely you’ll hire a car or join an excursion to see something of the interior with its traditional mountain villages, ancient Orthodox monasteries and stunning scenery.

Travel north up the coastline and you soon come to the Akamas National Park. This protected area of coastline and hill country is outstandingly beautiful and with no development allowed, it is entirely unspoilt. The best way to visit is by jeep in one of the organised expeditions available in Paphos.

Excursions

We have a full range of excellent excursions which can be booked locally, by coach or jeep; it’s now possible for tourists to visit places such as Kyrenia, Salamina and Famagusta in the Turkish controlled northern part of the island.

The Riu Cypria Hotel

Just a few minutes from the centre of Paphos is the Riu Cypria Hotel, a superb four star hotel with excellent facilities located on a small sandy beach.

The hotel has generous indoor and outdoor pools, excellent restaurants and bars, a good fitness room, and a meeting room for our private use. There is also a bowling green for those who enjoy the sport.

Rooms are spacious and include everything you would expect of a four star hotel such as Satellite TV, air conditioning, heating, music channels and radio, direct dial telephone. Bathrooms include baths and showers, hairdryers, shaver outlets.

Balconies face either inland or towards the pool with a side sea view. Pool and sea view rooms come at a small supplement. Single supplements are very modest for such a high quality hotel. Rooms also include a fully stocked minibar and a safety deposit box for which small charges are payable locally.
